Castings for the elevator of the future

With Multi, the world’s first elevator capable of moving sideways, technology company thyssenkrupp is redefining elevator engineering. Multiple magnetised cabins operate on an electromagnetic track, enabling the system to move vertically, horizontally and diagonally, all without requiring passengers to transfer between cabins.

RG Castings Group supported this groundbreaking innovation with two custom-engineered aluminium castings, critical to the performance of the motors driving the Multi lift.

Precision cooling for peak performance

The aluminium motor housing not only protects the Multi’s drive units, but also plays a vital role in thermal management. Cooling is achieved through integrated cooling fins, which rapidly and evenly dissipate the heat generated during motor operation. Without efficient cooling, the motors risk overheating, compromising reliability and system uptime.

Casting these fins requires exceptional precision. The ribs must be narrow enough to maximise heat dissipation, yet structurally robust to maintain mechanical integrity under continuous load. To meet these requirements, sand casting with a special sand was chosen, a process ideally suited for producing complex geometries with high dimensional accuracy and material consistency.

Tested at the highest level

A groundbreaking innovation demands thorough testing. The Multi elevator was installed in a 246 metre-high, purpose-built test tower in Germany. The entire system was put through rigorous, real-world testing, including both the core elevator technology and the motor housing with integrated cooling fins supplied by RG Castings Group.

And with success: test results show that Multi can deliver up to 50% higher transport capacity while reducing peak power demand by as much as 60% compared to conventional elevator systems. This makes the technology both more efficient and significantly more energy-saving.

Through this project, RG Castings Group once again proved itself a solution-oriented partner in advanced technologies, offering deep expertise in high-precision aluminium casting for demanding applications.
