Design furniture in raw aluminium

For her graduation project, designer Louisa Moerman developed a design side table that places the purity and expressiveness of aluminium at the centre. As an alumna of LUCA School of Arts, she is now continuing her line of design furniture, including a unique chair. In each design, aluminium remains visible and honest, used both as a structural and aesthetic element.

Raw cast aluminium, refined by hand

For the realisation of her design furniture, Moerman collaborated with RG Castings Group, who cast the individual components in raw aluminium using sand casting. Instead of a traditional welded construction, Moerman opted for a structure composed of four separate, two-dimensional plates in solid cast aluminium. By sliding the plates into each other, they form three-dimensional furniture pieces in which the structure remains fully visible. Each component was then manually finished by the designer, adding a distinctive surface texture.

Unveiled Collective - LUCA School of Arts

Louisa Moerman is one of the nine promising designers of Unveiled Collective, a group of young graduates from LUCA School of Arts in Ghent and Brussels. Within the collective, material research takes centre stage. Rather than starting from a fixed end result, the designers begin with direct experimentation with materials. By thoroughly exploring their properties, behaviour and potential, their findings guide the design process. Research, experimentation and craftsmanship thus become visible parts of the final object. For COLLECTIBLE Brussels 2026, Unveiled Collective presents new works that build on this ongoing research.
